Tip of the Day

Facebook Tip - Do NOT create two (or more) facebook profiles!

We strongly advise you not to have two Facebook profiles. When someone
searches for you by name they will have no way of knowing which profile of yours
to connect with, even if you name them “work” and “personal” because your
contact will just choose one and you have no control over which you choose. It
also creates bland blurr and confusion. If you are worried about people
hijacking your wall with their spam, you can prevent your connections from

Cold Calling Tip – How do you warm up cold calls?

One of the secrets to getting a stranger to warm up to you on the phone is to be a good listener. It also helps if you match their conversational pace, tone, and voice pitch. Pay close attention to the language they use – if they say words like “feel” then you talk about feelings, if they give you the numbers or percentages then use facts and statistics in your conversation, etc. If they speak fast then you speed up a bit, or if they speak slow, calm yourself down and match their cadence.

Cold Calling Tip - Sometimes "No" is better than YES!

If you get a “no” at the beginning should you continue the call trying to convince them or go on to the next call?

The initial “no” can often be “I’m busy” or “I’m being watched” or something as simple as they are just in a bad mood. Therefore I usually try something like “I understand you’re probably very busy right now but this is important so would you prefer I call you back tomorrow morning or are evenings better?” I may also say “If you prefer I can contact you at a different, more private, phone number?”

LinkedIn Tip – Should you invite strangers to connect with you on LinkedIn if you want to recruit them?

Cold Calling – What you should capture and track on a Cold Calling spreadsheet?

The spreadsheet we recommend includes reasonable biographical data and a few performance indicators:  First Name, Last Name, Email, Phone, Company, Title, Targeted Role (the role they may be a fit for), Description or Bio (a brief summary of their skills), Website (or LinkedIn profile, etc), Source Method (weather they were found on a search engine, social network, etc.), Source Code (which specific site within the methods, i.e.

Social Networking Tip

Unyk seems redundant. Should I use it? We recommend you get on it in case someone wants to find you there but we don’t really use it much to synchronize our contacts. If we need to find someone, we’ll check Plaxo first then Unyk but we’re not really active in either at this time.

Blogging Tip – On your blog, be yourself, use your real name and title.

Express your own ideas. Use the blog to reflect the company’s image and values, but don’t just “tow the company line” – express your own thoughts and ideas too.
