How to find a job (stats for recruiters, too)

Want to forward something useful to all those job-seekers who ask for advice? Forward the link to this recent multimedia treatment of a Fortune magazine story on job hunting. Many basic but solid tidbits to share on resumes, job hunting, networking, etc.  Don't forget to mouseover all the small inset boxes which reveal additional information.  The job fair data (p.6) is limited, but overall it's pretty good for a free resource.

For recruiters and other people who already know the above stuff, you may find interesting their compilation of Bureau of Labor Statistics data on the number of unemployed workers per available job opening by industry (p.5). Comparing Jan. 2008 vs. Jan. 2009, construction and manufacturing fared worst, with the number of unemployed workers per job opening in construction rising five times over that 12-month period, and almost 5x in manufacturing. The ratio worsened by a factor of 2x in banking, and similar woes for hotels/food and government. Banking was only 1 unemployed person per job opening a year ago, now up to 2 unemployed per opening. Education was unchanged over the year (still 2 unemployed workers per open job) as was healthcare (still a 1:1 ratio). Hotels and food, government, and retail were also covered. Compare this to the Indeed Industry Trends index that I discussed in a previous post.
