How to figure out email addresses via search engines
Someone tweeted this question to one of my colleagues, and after discussing it, I decided it was too long to answer in a tweet, and worth posting to my blog to benefit others, so now there's a URL to forward!
Q: Doesn't Google have a feature to find email addresses, say I wanted to find an email address for someone at Amazon, what would I do?
A: No, not specifically. Google doesn't want to make it that easy for spambots and mail harvesters to bombard random people with e-commerce solicitations (it happens enough already).
However, even though there’s no single perfect free method, since it appears you know the person’s name, you can try any of the following on Google or your favorite search engine:
“firstname lastname” “amazon dot com”
“firstname lastname” amazon (email OR contact)
Or use Google Groups (http://groups.google.com) and search using
author:”firstname lastname”
which will turn up any newsgroup posts made by that person, and if you click the View Profile link next to their name in the from: field of any message results, it will generate an image challenge prompt, which once entered, will display their email address.
Normally, it’s easy enough to email firstname.lastname@company.com and bcc: firstname_lastname@company.com and firstinitialLastname@company.com and whichever of those doesn’t bounce back is the right one.
However, Amazon is one of the relatively few but growing number of companies (notably along with Yahoo, Google and Microsoft) that don’t follow a standard email address convention, so it may not be guessable this way.

Russ Moon - Sourcing is a Journey, not a Destination.
Welcome to my blog, make yourself at home for a few minutes.
I am on a journey to evolve and refine my skills and as I walk the path I intend to use my blog as a means of sharing that journey with you. A means of giving back some of the information I yearn for to cut my own learning curve….no real need for two people to drive over the same hole in the road….unless you like the bumps, in which case go right ahead.
There are many exciting adventures awaiting me in 2010 and I invite you to come along as a spectator, a participant, to join the dialogue as you wish….whatever you want to be and share the journey with me.
We all learn more together as a community.
I’ll transparently outline without naming names mistakes I make, what happened, what I learned from it and depending on the type of mistake how I’ll prevent it in the future.
Sometimes I’ll talk about things that went right in hopes of encouraging someone, reinforcing for myself the techniques or behaviors to repeat or to just share the good news in a humble manner.
I’m not what most would call a natural, it normally takes me a couple sessions to count a new technique as one I can use successfully by myself consistently so you will see how I learn and what it takes to really hone your craft as a sourcer/researcher. Q4 of 2009 has already set a heavy theme of networking for new techniques, practically testing them to see what really works for me in my searches and committing to a high time investment in training. I’ll share what I’m learning as I go…..sometimes it is humbling for me and sometimes it seems to be quite entertaining for those around me…both outcomes are just fine with me :)
Diverse opinions and ideas are welcome, my only ask is to be very aware that we all have our own perspectives and keep the comments positive and fact based. Show respect for those who have enough courage to publically express their viewpoints.
Heavily engaged so no shortage of adventures, learning’s, funny stories and practical knowledge.
I would also encourage you to explore this site which is full of free tools and tips, advice I am taking myself and have already had several pleasant surprises. Arbita is about openly sharing and this site is consistent with that piece of their culture.
